Get in the Car
“Fifty years from now, when you're looking back at your life, don't you want to be able to say you had the guts to get in the car?”
Sam Witwicky: Transformers (2007)
This is one of my favourite movie quotes and it happens at a point in the film when the main character Sam and his love interest have a choice, do they give in to fear and run from the Autobots or fight their fear and join them.
Obviously, our choices in life don’t involve running from or joining death robots, but the quote does raise the point that if you overcome your fears, it could take you to places that you have previously only dreamed of.
While writing this I couldn’t help but rewatch this film and just after the described scene the song “Before it’s too late” by the Goo Goo Dolls Playas. And I've had that song on repeat in the car since, the line that gets me goes:
“The risk that might break you is the one that would save.”
There is so much power in that notion, there is risk in taking your own path in life, but it is that same risk that you to a better place and where you want to be in your life.
(didn’t really have any pictures to go with this thread so here are some that I took many years ago on an Australia Day Ute run. )
I recently finished a master’s degree following my BA in photography. Prior to this, I wanted to run my own photography business and without blowing too much smoke up my own backside, I was alright at photography. I was, however, lacking in the confidence department, so I took a chance after some encouragement from my wife and now here we are. The master's degree is a professional art practitioner, and it is basically a business master's tailored for running a small art based business.
I had started my website prior to the degree and was happy with that, I didn’t want to do market stores or face to face selling, and looking back this again comes down to low confidence in myself. But once I did take that leap, I found out that actually, it is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it. I was hoping to continue them from the start of this year but due to a close call with my wife's health I was unable to do so, but she is on the mend meaning I am able to get back to it.
(Some pics of some of the adventures I had with the 2 cars I owned in Australia and 1 from inside my brother’s RX7)
The line from the song pretty much sums up where we are in our lives right now, there is a lot of risk in what we want to do and where we want to go but it is definitely something we need to see through as there is a better life for all of us out there.
To sum it all up, I would never know how much potential I had if I had never taken the risk in pursuing further studies, I would never have discovered how much I love running a market store his I never had a go at it.
