Fishing Boats

So, since I have been working on a project that involves reflection, I thought id share with you all what is probably my favourite reflection.

 The Location

Fisherman’s Wharf is a small wharf not far from Darwin City and for many years was a favourite fishing spot of mine. It’s a great place to fish and chips, get fresh seafood or just chill out, which apart from fishing is how I used to spend most of my time there. And obviously, as the name suggests fishing boats, there are lots of fishing boats.

So, it would be inevitable that when I took up photography, it became a place I enjoyed capturing images. It is an incredible place to watch the massive thunderstorms move in that frequent this part of the Top End. It is where I captured my favourite lightning shot, and it is where I took my now wife to see our first sunrise together and at the same time capture my favourite sunrise photo. I will speak about these photos at some point, either in a blog post or a photo of the month.

The story

There is no real exciting story to how I captured this image, there’s no big, croc dodging story to this image. It was just me, out enjoying my life while I was learning all about digital photography. I had not long purchased my first digital camera and was spending my spare time exploring Darwin and the surrounding area. Today the camera would likely be considered a basic point and shoot camera. It did have some manual settings, which is what I was most interested in. One of these was exposure length, I was limited to a maximum exposure of 3 seconds which I made full use of for this mage.

I captured this image from a part of the wharf precinct that I didn’t often visit, but to my luck, I went left instead of continuing to walk down the wharf and that’s when I saw the reflection of the lights.

When I look at this image, I can still hear the sound of the fishing boat’s engines and the water lapping at the concrete base below me. I can still smell the salt and the diesel exhaust. And even now looking back to when I captured this image in 2007, right up till now when I am working on a reflection project, where I have captured some mirror like reflections, this is still my favourite reflection shot by far.
